SAEL is engaged in rice milling for producing Common Rice as well as Superfine rice. Through rice milling operations, in addition to polished rice, by-products like the husk of the plant, rice bran, etc. are also produced.
The economic viability of the rice milling process is ensured by the useful commercial utilization of its by-products through value addition. These by-products are used in a better and profitable manner, both for industrial purposes as well as food for human beings, and cattle feed. SAEL increased the capacity of its downstream operations in order to increase profits from these by-products, which in turn provide enough quantity of husk as fuel to run the power generation station throughout the year.
Constituting the largest by-product of rice milling, as one-fifth of the paddy by weight is rice husk. Rice husk has a high calorific value of 3200-3300 k.cal/kg and is considered a good fuel for a variety of industrial uses, though its major use at present is boiler fuel, wherever parboiling and paddy drying is practised using steam as the drying medium. Rice bran is the layer between the inner white rice grain and the outer hull. While comprising just 8-10% of total weight, rice bran (which includes the germ) accounts for 60% of the nutrients found in each rice kernel.
